Detroit's Downfall

I usually don't agree with HUGE that much, but the article he wrote in today's Sports section of the GR Press is right on. I probably look forward to the NBA season as much as any professional sports and I think the Pistons run of being a contender and making the playoffs is over. There have been plenty of moves being made in the Eastern Conference and all the Pistons have done so far is release Amir Johnson and sign a guy that's real tall, skinny, and nonathletic. Last time I checked, the NBA is full of guys that fit this profile.

It starts at the top. Curry is in way over his head. After the draft, Curry said something like this...We are going to focus more on character type guys than we have in the past. I'm not going to let anything like last year happen again while I'm in charge. I think Curry's point here was that it wasn't his idea to pick up Iverson last year and therefore it's not his fault they were as bad as they were. That being said, Iverson is not the easiest guy in the league to coach, but he has been extremely successful over his career playing for all different types of coaches. When you bring in a Hall of Famer, you figure out a way to use him the best you can. Iverson gave up on the team after the coach gave up on him.

Curry is just the start of their problems, but it doesn't seem like Dumars is accountable to anyone now that Davidson has passed away. Rest in Pieces Mr. Davidson. Your team is falling apart and Dumars now has to answer to your wife. Sad but true.

In a perfect world...Curry is gone, replaced by who, and then what's next?

  1. Possum,

Good points. At first I thought Curry was going to be a good coach. There are a lot of times when former NBA Players that were role players during their career make very good head coaches. They sometimes understand the game better since they did not have the superior athleticism and skill to skate through, but instead made a career by understanding the game better.

Well, about a month into the season, it was evident that Curry was as lost as any coach that has ever coached. He did a horrible job with game management, and what turns out to be more important, he did a horrible job managing the personalities of the team. He simply lost the team. Curry is responsible for this, but Dumars ultimately shoulders this responsibility. I am a big Dumars guy. But my tune is changing a little more every year. He blew the Darko pick - it happens. But I question coaching changes, free agent pickups, draft choices of foreign players, the list goes on. He traded my hero 2 games into last season. Though it was like getting punched in the face, I was fine with it because Joe was building for the future. The season goes on and Chauncey is ridiculous and could have very easily led his new team to a championship. But the Pistons are building for the future, right? Right?????? If Charlie Get-A-New-Name-Ah is going to be the big free-agent splash this Summer, consider me Miles Davis.

I have officially lost interest in the team. If Joey D. doesn't start turning this around, the Lions are going to pass by the Pistons. The Lions are already more popular, but they will end up with more success, but that is another topic for another day.

    Sincerely,

  2. Charlie V has said he wants to go to Cleveland and Cleveland is trying to get him, so my assumption is the Pistons will not get Mr. No Hair.
Joe D has made a lot of good decisions for the team in the past but seems to be getting by on his reputation and not recent history. Over the past couple of seasons he's really done a bad job with the team and is taking them in the wrong direction, especially with a veteran core that don't have many good years left.
His pick of Daye was AWFUL, especially when he's said that Stuckey is more of a 2/combo guard and not a point guard, and he could have drafted a guy like Ty Lawson. Selecting a stick-figure wasn't the best choice, especially when he won't even play for 2-3 years until he can build enough strength to break the 200 lb barrier.
They definitely don't seem to know the direction they want to go in, rebuild or go for one more championship with the veterans.
And they will NEVER be anything with Curry coaching, he is terrible.
